John Richard Jeanneret, also known as a Rick Jeanneret he was a Canadian TV and radio personality who was famous for being the play-by-play announcer for the Buffalo Sabres and the Sabres Hockey Network for 51 years. He started with the team on the radio during their second season in 1971-72 and ended his career after the 2021-22 season. He was the longest-tenured play-by-play announcer with a single team in NHL history. Jeanneret was born on July 23, 1942, in St. Catharines, Ontario, and raised in Terrace Bay, Ontario. He was known for his energetic delivery, colorful player nicknames, passionate goal calls, and his trademark suspenders worn on air. Jeanneret worked with different partners throughout his career, including Jim Lorentz, Harry Neale, and Rob Ray.

 

Death Cause

So, Rick Jeanneret passed away on August 17, 2023, due to multiple organ failure. His family said it all started back in 2021 when he was still playing with the team. He was 81 years old. Rest In Peace

Career

Rick Jeanneret started his career at CHUM in Toronto. He took classes at the Midwest Broadcasting School in Chicago to learn how to be on the air. After he graduated, he became a disc jockey at CKLY in Lindsay, Ontario. He then worked at CHVC, later CJRN in Niagara Falls. In 1963, he took over the play-by-play of a Niagara Falls Flyers Junior A hockey game. He became the color analyst the following season before becoming the full-time play-by-play radio announcer in 1965. He also did radio advertisements for Buildall and called Buffalo Bisons (AHL) road games in 1969-70. From 1984 to 1992, he did the Sabres’ play-by-play and was a disc jockey at CJRN-AM. In 1992, he retired from CJRN to focus on the Sabres. Jeanneret helped close the Aud on the final night of the regular season in 1996 with an emotional tribute to his colleague Ted Darling. In 2005, Jeanneret and the Sabres released a CD called Roll the Highlight Film, which collected some of his most memorable calls. The proceeds went to charity. It was followed up in 2006 with Top Shelf, a similarly themed CD named after his signature call.

On November 8, 2011,Rick Jeanneret alongside former Sabre Dale Hawerchuk, was inducted into the Buffalo Sabres Hall of Fame. The Sabres later announced on June 6, 2012, that Jeanneret would be inducted into the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame. On June 8, 2012, the Sabres announced that Jeanneret would receive the Foster Hewitt Memorial Award and be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, which took place on November 12, 2012. Jeanneret was also inducted into the Buffalo Broadcasting Hall of Fame on September 20, 2012
